How to recover the main menu bar in Maya

by Joe!

Joe! here… I’ve been working a lot with Maya in our videos recently, and came across a few hiccups; due to the fact it has more buttons than the baddie on Coraline it is very easy to hit one by mistake.

How to recover the Timeline in Maya – This was one of my first questions, the answer I found was going to Display/UI Elements and then ticking the Timeline View tab.

How to recover the Main Menu bar in Maya! – was my next big question; a sort of catch 22 question seeing as in order to recover the bar, you need to have the bar…

However there is a simple keyboard shortcut; ctrl+M. Done! That easy!

Hope this helps all you aspiring Maya users like myself!

Mmmm… have you tried pressing “ctrl+M”?
Do you mean the main menu as in File/ Edit/ View/ etc?

  3. Nick says:

I have tryed “ctrl + M” with no results?
    What else can I do.
Do it not work in the trial version?
    Cheers

    Hey Nick,
I’m afraid I’ve not tried the trial version, but it’s weird that they would’ve disabled such an important feature!
As far as I know the Ctrl+M shortcut should work in every version as do the typical ctrl+S, ctrl+C, or ctrl+Z commands.
I don’t know of any other way to recuperate the menu bar, without the menu bar! I’m sorry…

Looks like your only other option is to re-install the trial version, to set the layout back to the default.

    Hey Joel,
I have found a student version of Maya 2012 and its doing the same the trial version.
AAArr! Still no main menu bar…even when trying ctrl-M?

    Unfortunately re-install didnt work either.
If you happen to find out anymore information, please let me know.

    Cheers

    Got it!
Domingo and Nick – sorry for the delay, but I’ve just thought of how you can get back the menu bar, despite ctrl+M command not working!!

Hold down space in the viewport – a box will appear, go to Hotbox Controls/ Window Options/ and check the Show Main Menubar box!
    Presto!

    Hope this works! (it works),
    Joe!

    Great thanks Joe,
I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I was expecting the main menu to appear at the top of the main window….And this is not the case…I think it appeared there in earlier versions on Maya….Aaaaar! But now it appears were ever the mouse arrow is when the space bar is pressed….its a short cut keyboard command!!

    Cheers Joe!
